Pura Weddings and Pura Vida

News | 10 June 2009

Pura Vida (POO-rah VEE-dah) is an expression that you will become quite familiar with if you decide to get married in Costa Rica. Pura Vida literally translates to “Pure Life” and is the expression that Costa Ricans (also known as Ticos) live by. They take a relaxed approach to life and this approach is precisely what makes Costa Rica such a fun place to get married.

I love when brides and grooms integrate local culture and traditions and incorporate ‘pura vida’ elements into their wedding weekend. Here are some of my favorites:

Pura Vida and Pura Carnaval…

Alright, alright, the carnaval is actually ‘borrowed’ from Brazil but it has become both common and popular at weddings in Costa Rica. What better way to end the night than dancing to the beat of the drum while sipping tequila?

Pura Vida and Pura Salsa…

Merengue, salsa, just to name a few. Costa Ricans love to dance and your time here would simply not be complete without some local music and dancing. One couple decided to bring in a salsa troupe to get the party going at their wedding. First was a show to showcase the salsa troupe’s dancing skills and then a class for all of the wedding guests – it was a hit!

Pura Vida and Pura Espanol…

As Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica, it’s a fun idea to integrate some Espanol when possible. One couple used ‘Mesa’ instead of ‘Table’ on their table numbers. A simple yet nice way to add ‘local’ flair

Pura Vida and Pura Colores…

Costa Rica is such a colorful country. From the emerald jungles to the turquoise seas, it’s a shame to not integrate the many tropical colors of Costa Rica into your wedding decor. Here are some of my favorite flower arrangements…

Pura Vida and Pura Leis…

Ok so leis were not invented in Costa Rica but we have officially adopted them. A groom and groomsmen featured below wore leis made out of orchids and walked down the aisle barefoot – love it!

Pura Vida and Pura Chinese Lanterns…

I love, absolutely love chinese lanterns! At this particular wedding, the color scheme was orange and yellow (bright and vibrant colors and flowers) so orange lanterns seemed to be the proper choice. They looked spectacular! Definitely adds a pura vida and pura tropical vibe to your event on the beach.
